In April of 2008, Governor David A. Paterson issued Executive Order 2 establishing a State Energy Planning Board and authorizing the creation and implementation of a State Energy Plan in order to "enable the State to determine its future energy needs and facilitate a deliberate, efficient, and cost-effective means of meeting those needs."

Following months of collaboration with stakeholders and members of the public, the State Energy Planning Board issued a final plan in December of 2009.

The 2009 State Energy Plan is available online at www.nysenergyplan.com. The 2013 State Energy Plan proceeding has begun, which calls on the Board to complete a State Energy Plan on or before March 15, 2013.

To create the new State Energy Plan, the State Energy Planning Board will conduct the planning process, which will culminate in recommendations that, when implemented, will keep New York at the forefront among the states in providing its residents with reliable, economical, and clean energy resources.
