New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA)
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a public benefit corporation created in 1975 by the New York State Legislature to help address the Staet’s energy and environmental challenges.
NYSERDA derives much of its current funding from rate payers through a charge on the electricity transmitted and distributed by the State’s investor-owned utilities, which is referred to as the System Benefits Charge (SBC). Established in 1996, SBC funds are used to support energy-efficiency programs, research and development of innovative energy technologies, renewable energy development and programs targeted at lower-income consumers and environmental monitoring programs. Nearly 2,700 projects in 40 programs are funded by the SBC, which was recently extended through June 30, 2011.
NYSERDA also administers the State’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program. Under the terms of the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), established by the Public Service Commission, NYSERDA provides support to new renewable energy projects with the goal of ensuring that 25 percent of the state's total electricity needs are met by clean energy resources by the year 2013.
ACE NY works closely with NYSERDA staff on the implementation of clean energy programs and supports continued funding for NYSERDA programs via PSC authorized utility customer surcharges.
NYSERDA’s programs and funding opportunities provide incentives to help the State's businesses, industries, municipalities, and residents address energy and environmental needs. These funding opportunities include energy audits and loan programs for home improvements as well as programs for new construction, commercial/industrial projects, and multifamily buildings. Please feel free to contact NYSERDA directly for more information about these programs and the many other services they provide.
